OWLS…OUT
How will this benefit my child? – Outdoor exposure and nature-based learning are essential for a child’s holistic development as they promote physical health, emotional well-being and cognitive growth. Through hands-on explorative play, children develop problem-solving skills, creativity, social interactions, and a deeper connection with the natural world, laying the foundation for well-rounded personal and academic success.

Not only does research show that ‘children in inner-city London experience nature deficiencies’, the benefits of outdoor learning on your child’s development are vast. Each session will provide opportunities for your child to develop their communication and language skills, their personal, social and emotional skills, their understanding of the world and their ability to be creative. Outdoor learning aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
“Our forests and woods are nature’s playground for the adventurous, museum for the curious, hospital for the stressed, cathedral for the spiritual, livelihood for the entrepreneur… and laboratory for the child researcher.” (Jones and Jones, 2012)
But what does outdoors have to do with learning indoors?
Most child development theorists write about the benefits of the outdoors in a person’s holistic development. Most adults view a child’s time playing outdoors as an important opportunity to ‘let off steam’ but what if I told you (backed by the research obviosity!) that scientists have also identified the principle of ’cause-and-effect’ in relation to academic success – in other words, improvements in education resulted directly from being outside more. A very recent study found strong evidence that “time in nature has a rejuvenating effect on attention; relieves stress; boosts self-discipline; increases physical activity and fitness; and promotes student self-motivation, enjoyment, and engagement - and all of these have been shown to improve learning.” At OWLS…OUT you can tangibly feel the children developing session after session. Therefore, the bigger the dose of nature we give a person, the bigger the positive effect we see in them!
It’s time to take nature seriously as a resource for learning.
